Primary Daily Schedule
Primary Classroom Daily Program
Our program for the 3 – 6 year olds is rooted in the foundations of Montessori philosophy, providing opportunities for optimal human growth and development.
How the adult regards and relates to the child is essential in building relationships – this is an important foundation upon which all learning rests. Key principles include:
Respect for the Child Individualized Instruction
Freedom to Choose Concept of Work
Independence – Self Mastery Order/Organization
Throughout the day, children choose from five major areas of the Montessori Curriculum: Practical Life (which includes activities representing everyday living), Sensorial, Language, Cultural (including art, geography, science, and music) and Math. Work in each of these areas is arranged within each classroom in an orderly fashion. Teachers offer lessons on a one-on-one and medium group basis to the children as they are ready. Throughout the work period, children are free to move about the room, choosing from the works that have been presented. Movement in the classroom and hands-on learning experiences are integral to the program.
A daily nutritious snack is served each morning. Children may choose when to partake in snack as snack is available. In addition to providing nutrition, snack allows each child a social encounter with a friend and a valuable opportunity to practice social graces and courtesy.
Collective time is also a part of the child’s daily routine, and takes place on the circle in each classroom for a short portion of the day. These collectives give the children a valuable group experience. They have opportunities to listen to stories, sing songs, explore creative movement, and share with others.
Morning Children (3 – 4 year olds) 8:20 – 11:30
Extended Day Children (5 – 6 year olds, as they are ready)
8:20 – 3:10 Monday – Thursday
8:20 – 11:30 Fridays
The Montessori Primary classroom is based on a three-year cycle. Children entering at age 3 gradually progress through the curriculum over the course of three years. Children have the opportunity to repeat work until the concept taught through each material has been absorbed. Along with the valuable repetition of lessons comes the opportunity for the children to explore, extend, and discover endless possibilities with the materials. New challenges are presented as the children are ready.
Each year plays a vital role with the third year providing the culmination of community and educational life. As children enter their third year in the classroom, they begin their life in “extended day”, staying for lunch and recess, enjoying a longer school day Monday – Thursday. This allows the children to become involved in more complex work, attend field trips, and experience the school specialists in the areas of music, nature study, and physical education.
